I’m a solicitor with over 20 years’ experience, specialising in conveyancing and property litigation, more recently working in company law and governance. The majority of my career has been spent working in-house for a social housing provider, where I’ve advised on a wide range of complex legal and strategic matters.
Professionally, I bring extensive legal expertise in areas directly relevant to Horton’s work, property and company law, regulatory compliance and governance gained from over 14 years’ supporting social housing providers through complex legal and strategic issues.
I have worked closely with Board members on a range of governance matters from reviewing constitutional documents and organisational structure to appraisals and onboarding, giving me great insight into what good governance looks like.
Joining the Board felt like a natural extension of my work and personal values, offering a chance to use my professional expertise to support an organisation making a tangible difference.
Horton Housing’s values and mission closely align with my own, particularly the commitment to supporting people with vulnerabilities. I was drawn to Horton’s person-centred, inclusive approach and the opportunity to be part of a governance structure that supports truly life-changing services.
Being a Board member at Horton is both a privilege and a learning opportunity. It allows me to contribute to meaningful change while gaining a deeper understanding of the strategic and operational aspects of the organisation. It allows me to give back to the sector that has shaped so much of my life.
A role on the Board allows me to gain new perspectives from fellow board members, opportunities for professional development in strategic leadership, and the satisfaction of knowing that my contribution helps shape services that support people experiencing vulnerabilities in our society.
Personally, I bring lived experience of growing up in social housing, which gives me a deep, personal understanding of the value of safe, secure, and affordable homes. It also gives me insight into the real-world impact of policy decisions. That experience has shaped both my personal values and professional journey, and it continues to drive my commitment to social justice and community-led services.
My background as a Muslim woman also adds to the diversity of perspective on the Board, helping to ensure we consider the needs and experiences of the communities we serve.
I have three children of school age who keep me very busy. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading and gardening.
