Board Profile: Huw Jones

As a long-standing board member, I discovered the Bradford Day Shelter through my research on single homelessness. As I learnt more about Horton Housing and how it aimed to help those experiencing homelessness and other issues, I wanted to help in any way I could. I found Horton Housing to be an excellent organisation with forward-looking ideas and an absolute commitment to providing the types of services that could help people experiencing homelessness rebuild their lives.

I have a passionate belief that everyone has the right to a safe, secure and good quality home and that it is essential that the most vulnerable in our society are offered the best quality support to help them live the lives they want to live and realise their potential.

Also, I have experienced a number of personal issues over the years, in particular with alcohol misuse and mental ill-health, which has given me some understanding of the types of crisis that people find themselves in. The stigmas attached to some issues are grossly unfair and unhelpful, and access to high-quality support to help overcome them is crucial.

This experience, along with some knowledge and understanding of the political, social and economic contexts in which Horton works, helps the development of the work that Horton does and I gain immense pride in being associated with its work.

Three interesting facts about me:

  • I have played guitar and bass guitar in a number of bands
  • I am a Tottenham Hotspur supporter
  • I’m an adopted Yorkshireman, having grown up in London

Huw is Chair of the Horton Housing Management Board and a member of the Policy and Resources Committee.
