Shay has volunteered at the training centre for around two years, after attending a group there in the past. He had previously helped out with odd jobs like painting and gardening before starting two new voluntary roles last year.
“I am a Donations Delivery Driver and also a Donations Sorter,” he tells us, explaining how shifts can vary from a few hours to a full day across the week. These new roles were formed as we saw a surge in generous donations from across the community during the pandemic.
“It keeps me occupied and also off the drink. It allows me to give something back as well. Getting out of the house and seeing people, being trusted again and given the chance to do something different has been great. It makes me feel useful, I have met new people and I like helping others.” he added.
Shay has seen first-hand how much the donations Horton Housing Association receive can impact the people we support and believes that playing a part in distributing the items is very rewarding.
“It makes a lot of difference. I think the donations have had the most impact; it’s just great what we are doing to support people. It’s nice to see the smile on someone’s face when we deliver a donation.”
Very proud of what he has achieved during his time volunteering, Shay is also thankful for the support he has been given by other members of the team.
“I am really grateful for all the support I get from the people at the training centre. It has been really good through the pandemic because, when I have not seen anyone, I have been able to talk to them on the phone. I love what I’m doing now and will be happy to do this for as long as I can. It’s a great feeling.”
