Your support worker

Your support worker is a friendly member of staff who will help you settle into the accommodation and achieve your goals.

Support workers are here to ensure you feel safe and secure in your accommodation. They will:

  • Help you to build and maintain positive, healthy relationships
  • Explain the rules and why they are in place
  • Understand and respect your routine
  • Provide a welcoming and supporting environment
  • Encourage you to express your views
  • Listen and understand you
  • Involve you in decisions
  • Work proactively and positively with other agencies and professionals.

Together, you will create a support plan that lists the things you want to achieve while you are staying with us.

For example, you may want to register with a doctor and a dentist, open a bank account and enrol at a college or university. We will help you to access essential healthcare and sexual health services or support with your mental health and wellbeing.

Your support worker may accompany you to appointments, cook or shop with you and help you to address any problems that might arise in your daily life.

They will listen to your concerns and help you come up with solutions.

You will have a named support worker and usually you will have the same support worker throughout your time with the service. However, you may be given a different support worker from time to time for example if your support worker changes job, is on holiday or you ask for a different person.

Support workers do not provide personal care, for example help with washing and dressing. They will encourage you to be as independent as possible.

Our support workers work to professional standards. They will not:

  • Use language that you may find offensive
  • Smoke in front of you
  • Borrow money or belongings from you
  • Accept gifts from you
  • Take personal calls in front of you, unless they are urgent.

You can ask to change your support worker if you don’t feel like you get on well.

If you have a complaint about your support worker, please contact the manager of the scheme or follow our complaints process:  Making A Complaint – Horton Housing
