What to do if you smell gas in your home

If you smell gas in your home, you need to act immediately.

  • Contact the free, 24 hour National Gas Emergency service number on 0800 111 999.
  • Open all the doors and windows to ventilate the area.
  • Don’t operate electrical switches (including turning lights on and off) and don’t smoke.
  • Switch off the gas emergency control (shut off) valve at the metre, if possible.
  • Ask everyone to leave the property if they can.
  • If you or anyone else who has been in the property feels unwell, go to hospital and let them know you may have been exposed to carbon monoxide.
  • Do not turn the gas supply on again until it has been checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Gas appliances, such as cookers, boilers or storage cylinders present a risk of fire, explosion, leaks and carbon monoxide poisoning. They must be properly installed and maintained.

We have a duty as a landlord to ensure that all gas appliances, fittings and flues at our accommodation are safe.

  • We carry out annual gas safety checks on all appliances in our properties.
  • Our housing staff carry out property checks on our accommodation which includes a visual check of gas appliances and testing of the carbon monoxide detector.
  • We only use approved ‘Gas Safe’ contractors to carry out gas installation, servicing, safety inspections and reactive repairs.
