Please note that most of the current volunteer roles advertised below require an enhanced DBS Check, of which we will cover the cost. All of our roles require volunteers to follow Safeguarding processes when needed.
Roles in Bradford
Befriender volunteer

You will provide regular social contact to someone who may be experiencing social isolation, loneliness, or has vulnerablities. You will listen actively and empathetically, offering a safe space for conversation.
As a peer mentor, you will build trust and rapport with the person over time, helping them to feel valued and understood.
You will encourage the person to develop their confidence and independence, sometimes supporting the person to engage in social activities or access services.
You will assist with any additional related tasks with the agreement of your supervisor/line manager.
This role is based at our male-only accommodation service in Shipley. Volunteer hours are flexible between Tuesday and Friday.
Knitting/sewing group volunteer tutor

The knitting/sewing group volunteer tutor will use their skills and knowledge to encourage and to teach people basic knitting/sewing skills. The knitting/sewing group is held every Friday at Horton Housing’s Training Centre. The role requires a weekly commitment.
Activities Support volunteer

You will assist colleagues with organising and engaging in group activities, including: arts and crafts, coffee mornings, community trips, and much more. The role will require you to attend the scheme once-a-week.
Communications Assistant volunteer

You will work alongside the Communications Team at Horton Housing’s head office for a minimum of 5 hours-per-week.
Tasks include supporting internal and external communications, creating content for the website and promotional materials, and assisting with event promotion.
Housekeeping volunteer

You will assist the team at the accommodation with general cleaning of the building. This includes cleaning the kitchen area, emptying bins, sweeping and mopping the floors in the communal areas, and cleaning toilets.
This role will help you gain experience in the cleaning sector and also provide you with workplace references.
This role requires someone who is physically fit as it involves light housekeeping and some lifting and carrying.
Roles in Calderdale
The volunteer roles listed below – from the Early Intervention and Prevention Assitant volunteer onwards – are based at our YPASS service in Calderdale. For more information or to apply, please contact YPASS Volunteer Coordinator Tanya on 07809 203876.
Handy person/ Activity support volunteer

You will be doing general maintenance tasks at our service based in Halifax for people who have experienced rough sleeping. The role includes clearing the yard and gardening, minor building upkeep and organising items. A part of this role will also be assisting with handing out flyers to local businesses and sorting donated items.
Early Intervention and Prevention Assistant volunteer

You will engage and offer support to young people who have been referred to our Young Persons’ Prevention and Support Service, while the young person waits to be allocated a support worker.
Duties include:
– In person and telephone befriending.
– Encouraging people to attend sessions in the scheme and in the local community.
– Uploading referrals to a secure online database, logging notes and completing forms.
Gardener volunteer

You will help to keep the outside space tidy and neat. The ideal candidate will have some knowledge of gardening, or a willingness to learn on the go.
Duties include:
– Pruning the already established shrubs and plants.
– Regularly de-weeding and clearing falling leaves and rubbish.
– Planning what to grow in the gaarden with the group.
Arts and Craft Facilitator volunteer

You will run our Arts and Craft’s group. The ideal candidate will have a passion for creating and making things with a group.
Duties include:
– Researching different things that can be made in a group setting with our members.
– Encouraging members to work together to make things.
– Encouraging members to communicate with each other while the group is in session.
ESOL Tutor volunteer

You will deliver in-house English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of teaching ESOL and an accreditation.
Duties include:
– Evaluating the student’s level of learning.
– Delivering a one hour session to a small group of students once-a-week.
– Creating lesson / session plans for students to follow.
Yoga Instructor volunteer

You will deliver in-house yoga sessions in our communal space. The idea candidate will have knowledge of facilitating yoga sessions and a yoga-related accreditation.
Duties include:
– Facilitating sessions that can be easily adapted to people’s capabilities.
– Being able to connect with members and keep them engaged in the session.
– Being encouraging and offering lots of praise to members in attendance.
Book Club Volunteer

You will deliver book club group sessions. The ideal candidate will have a passion for reading and unpacking stories.
Duties include:
– Photocopying chapters ahead of the sessions.
– Encouraging members to read and unpack the chapters.
– Involving members in discussions about what books to read next.
Admin Assistant volunteer

You will assist in the successful running of our office space. The idea candidate will have strong desire and willingness progress in an office environment.
Duties include:
– Carrying out organisational tasks like filing, organising and scheduling appointments.
– Assisting colleagues and drafting emails or messages.
– Supporting to manage and keep the office running smoothly.
Cooking Companion volunteer

You will assist with our Cook and Eat Sessions. The ideal candidate will have a passion for cooking and enjoying being in a group.
Duties include:
– Planning meals and researching recipes to cook in the session.
– Engaging with the group and encouraging conversations in the session.
– Supporting members to prepare and cook meals as a group.
Roles in Kirklees
Peer Support volunteer

This role is based at our Horton Intervention and Prevention Service (HIPS) in Huddersfield. You will be:
– Talking to people in the service on a one-to-one basis or within a group setting to provide guidance, support and encouragement.
– Supporting people to manage their money.
– Signposting people to local support services and housing information.
– Supporting people to navigate challenges, achieve their aspirations and goals, and promote positive relationships.
