Preventing damp and mould in your home

Do you have damp and mould in your property? If so, act now!

Moisture from everyday activities such as cooking, washing and drying clothes can lead to damp and mould in your home.

Condensation is the most likely cause of mould. Condensation is when tiny drops of water appear on cold surfaces such as windows or in areas where there is not much air movement such as behind wardrobes and cupboards.

Below are tips to help prevent damp in mould in your home and avoid condensation.

To avoid condensation:

  • Make sure your home is well ventilated. Open windows and use the extractor fan when taking a shower or cooking.
  • Cover pans while cooking and don’t leave the kettle continuously boiling.
  • Dry clothes outdoors if you can. If you can’t, then make sure the window is open.
  • In winter, try to keep your rooms as warm as possible.

Condensation can lead to black spots of mould growing on surfaces. This mould can be harmful if breathed in.

If you live in Horton accommodation, speak to your housing officer or support worker immediately if you spot damp or mould inside your property. If you don’t live in one of our properties, contact your landlord.
