We use electricity every day. It’s an integral part of our lives, from lighting and powering our homes, to entertainment, to connecting us with friends and family all around the world. But sometimes we forget that the energy in our homes can carry serious risks, especially when used incorrectly.

Here are some simple but effective steps you can take to prevent potential electrical accidents at home:

  • Check appliances and wires for damage
    • Look for exposed wires, scorch marks, melted plastic, or loose plugs.
    • Stop using any damaged equipment immediately.
  • Don’t overload sockets
    • Avoid plugging too many devices into one socket or extension lead.
    • Never plug one extension lead into another.
    • High-energy appliances (e.g. kettles, microwaves) should have their own socket.
  • Keep cables tidy and safe
    • Don’t run cables under rugs or near hot surfaces like radiators.
    • Avoid stretching cables around furniture.
    • Tidy cables reduce trip hazards and damage.
  • Use the correct lightbulbs
    • Always match the bulb wattage to the light fitting.
    • Using the wrong bulb can cause overheating.
  • Unplug devices when not in use
    • Helps prevent power surges.
    • Saves energy and reduces your electricity bill.
