New location for young people’s homeless service in Calderdale

Horton Housing’s service for young people in Calderdale who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness has moved to new, bigger premises. A large derelict building on the outskirts of Halifax has been redeveloped as a result of a partnership between Chartford Housing, Homes England and Calderdale Council. The refurbished building has 14 units of high quality accommodation which will be managed by Horton Housing to house young homeless people from Calderdale. The building includes offices where support staff from Horton Housing’s Young Person’s Prevention and Support Service (YPASS) will be based and on hand to assist the young people. YPASS also provides advice and support for young people aged 16-21 (or 25 if they are care leavers). This includes drop in advice sessions for people seeking support on housing,…

Could you spare a room for a young homeless person?

Could you spare a room for a young homeless person?

Horton Housing Association is looking for people in the Calderdale area who could make a real difference to a young person’s life by offering their spare room and some support. The Supported Lodging scheme gives a young person, who is homeless or at risk of homelessness, a warm, safe place to live, support in preparing to live independently and the chance to look forward to the future. Pat Fraser became a supported lodgings host two years ago. The role appealed to her after a career of working with young people – she has been both a college lecturer and a classroom support assistant for children with special needs. She has previously offered her spare room to overseas students from a local private school at weekends and holidays. She said: “I…

She came to the hostel after separating from her partner, with whom she had been living with at another hostel in Bradford. Charlotte is having a positive experience at Horton Housing's hostel and she is grateful for the staff there. She said: "I enjoy living by myself and learning how to live independently. It's nice because you come back to your own place and I'm keeping a roof over my head. The staff support you through it. They are there to talk to and they try to help me as much as they can. I give credit to them - they are brilliant. Now that I'm here I don't have any problems…

Case Study: YPASS – Ben & Samantha

Case Study: YPASS – Ben & Samantha

Ben* Ben’s stepfather was physically, emotionally and psychologically abusive towards him. Ben, 19, left the family home when he was 16 and sofa-surfed for a year. He started a relationship with a young woman and she became pregnant. They had moved into a small bedsit, which was in bad condition and poorly managed. Ben received tenancy support from YPASS. The couple moved into a two-bedroom housing association flat and received support from YPASS to set up and maintain the tenancy. Ben was given help to clear his debts and apply for a course at Kirklees College. YPASS gave Ben support with budgeting and helped him to apply for a Discretionary Housing Payment (DHP) to cover the shortfall in rent for the second bedroom until the baby was born. When his relationship ended, his…
